SEO guides Guide 02 · One-off vs ongoing

Is SEO a one-off job or an ongoing cost?

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings I come across. The honest answer is both — some SEO work genuinely is a one-off project, and some of it isn't, because visibility isn't something that ever gets permanently "finished."

A business may only need SEO support occasionally, periodically or continuously — depending entirely on its goals.

One-off vs ongoingBoth are true, depending on the goalSome SEO work is genuinely finite. Some genuinely isn't.

Done once, stays done

Real, defined pieces of work.

Fixing technical problems

Errors that stop Google reading the site properly, corrected once.

Setting up Search Console

A one-time configuration that then runs quietly in the background.

Submitting a sitemap

Telling Google what pages exist — a single, defined step.

Improving page titles

Rewriting titles and metadata across the site, done properly once.

Correcting indexing issues

Fixing pages that Google can't or won't include in search.

Restructuring pages

Reorganising content and navigation into a clearer structure.

An initial search-intent plan

Working out what customers actually search for, and mapping it to pages.

SEO foundations in a new build

Built in properly from the start, rather than added on afterwards.

Why visibility rarely stays "finished"

The world around the website keeps moving.

It's a bit like a shopfront window display. You don't rebuild the shop every week, but leaving the same display up for years eventually stops working — not because it broke, but because everything around it moved on.

01

Competitors keep moving

Existing competitors update their websites, and new competitors enter the market.

02

The business itself changes

New services, new locations or a shifted focus all need reflecting in the site.

03

Search behaviour shifts

How people phrase searches — and how local search works — changes over time.

04

Google keeps discovering more

New pages get found, and Search Console surfaces genuine opportunities as it goes.

05

Content ages

Information that was accurate and useful a year ago can quietly become outdated.

06

Authority isn't static

Websites gain and lose authority over time, and AI-driven search is changing how information gets discovered too.

Still deciding what's right for you

A permanent contract isn't the default.

Wondering how long any of this actually takes to show results?

Do I have to pay for SEO every month?

No. A lot of foundational SEO work is genuinely one-off. Ongoing work only makes sense if you're actively trying to build, maintain or defend visibility over time — and even then, it doesn't have to be a permanent monthly contract.

How do I know whether SEO is working?

Search Console and analytics show whether pages are being indexed, appearing in search, and receiving clicks. Genuine enquiries or bookings arriving through search are the clearest sign, but that usually takes longer to show than early indexing and impression data.
